In the book and HBO series Game of Thrones, Tywin Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, is his family’s patriarch. Both ruthless and pragmatic, the Hand of the King (or is he now that Joffrey is dead?), Tywin is one of the show’s most complex characters. Naturally he is a good case study in how to use LinkedIn more effectively:
- Organize your troops.
Tywin Lannister is never caught off guard because he knows his allies well and his enemies better. Similarly, effective networking on LinkedIn happens when you have a clear sense of who is on your team, so to speak.
LinkedIn: Ask your biggest cheerleaders for a recommendation. Then reciprocate with one that includes that the person did rock star job on a project lead (only if true). They will be grateful and you will gain credibility.
- Do the dirty work.
Tywin literally gutted an animal in Season 1 episode 7 while imparting an important lesson to his narcissistic son, Jamie:
“A lion does not concern himself with the opinions of sheep.”
Short cuts are attractive but often “sheep”, aka unproven practitioners, posit them to fill space on a page. Most progress comes from steady plodding.
There are three “dirty work” applications here:
- Complete your profile
- Look for common threads in your professional history
- Be active in groups
- Ask a former supervisor and subordinate for a recommendation
